YCC U.S. Embassy Rome
(As prepared for delivery)
I am pleased to join you to reflect on the sacrifice of our nation’s heroes.
We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to the men and women in uniform, both in the military and in law enforcement agencies.
We cannot have a nation without safety and security. Without the sacrifice of those in uniform, we could not enjoy the freedom and democracy we so fondly cherish.
I want to thank DEA for organizing this tribute. I understand this year’s event will be in honor of Marine Corps Captain Johnny Michael Spann, noted as the first American killed in action in the war in Afghanistan.
Reading his biography, I was impressed/moved by his dedication to duty, patriotism and courage.
We cannot repay his sacrifice, but I think a moment of silence would be fitting. Please join me in observing a moment of silence.
Thank you all for being here today. Thanks again to the men and women who protect our Tri-Mission. I hope you enjoy tomorrow’s event!
