June 28-29, 2018
Ambassador Eisenberg visited Palermo, his first trip to Sicily’s capital, which is also the Italian Capital of Culture for 2018. After touring the Mediterranean Institute for Transplantation and Advanced Specialized Therapies (ISMETT) which he described as “an excellent example of successful cooperation between the United States and Sicily,” he met with Palermo Prefect Antonella De Miro, Sicily’s Governor Nello Musumeci, Regional Assembly President Gianfranco Micciché, and Mayor of Palermo Leoluca Orlando. While in Palermo, Ambassador Eisenberg also took the opportunity to visit the magnificent Palatine Chapel, one of Norman cultural treasures of the city, and to host his first U.S. Independence Day reception in Italy. On June 29, he concluded his official business in Sicily with a tour of Agrigento’s Valley of the Temples archeological site, which includes some of the best-preserved Greek temples in the world.
