An unshakable commitment: The U.S. and NATO

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was founded in 1949 in the aftermath of World War II, with the purpose of securing peace in Europe.

Every American president since Harry Truman, who championed NATO’s creation, has reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to the principle of collective defense, which makes up the core of this now 30-nation alliance.
