On Thursday, Dec 22nd, PAO Chris Wurst presented American Prima Ballerina Misty Copeland with the Consul General’s Award for Cultural Diplomacy at a luncheon reception hosted by Irene and Vincenzo Gambino in her honor. Roberto Bolle, La Scala’s etoile, invited Ms. Copeland to dance with him in an attempt to: DANCE AGAINST (RACIAL BARRIERS).

The local edition of La Repubblica carried an article by the title: “Bolle: Misty and Me: Our Ballet against Barriers.”

Bolle noted: “We are not used to see an African-American Juliet. But this is an important sign, it is modern, it is change. It’s going against barriers and prejudices. “An unconventional choice and a sign of the times.”  Bolle praised Copeland for her talent. Romeo and Juliet opened on Tuesday Dec 20.
