On Wednesday October 12th, Milan Consul General Amb. Philip Reeker joined Giorgio Guerello, Genoa City Council President, in delivering remarks at the House of Christopher Columbus.  According to tradition, Columbus spent his early childhood in this small house. While this may not be entirely true, historians have agreed that the area around this house, beneath the imposing city gates of Porta Soprana, is where Columbus and his family lived.

The house has undergone various restorations. The most recent one was in 2001 when it was selected as the Italy-USA’s Treasure for the Italy-USA Millennium Project.  This was proposed by the U.S. Diplomatic Mission to Italy in 1999, as an Italian replica of Save America’s Treasures (former First Lady Hillary Clinton’s Millennium Project to celebrate the advent of Year 2000).

Consul General Amb. Philip Reeker later joined Genoa Mayor Marco Doria, and delivered key-note remarks for the “Giorno di Genova e di Colombo” at Palazzo Ducale.
