Thomas Smitham is the Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy to Italy.
Since joining the Foreign Service, he has served abroad in Mexico, Peru, Belgium, the UK, and Trinidad and Tobago. In Washington, he focused on economic policy in the State Department as chief of staff to the Under Secretary for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment, the Department’s senior economic official. In Trinidad, Tom recently served as Charge d’Affaires, heading the U.S. Embassy in the southern Caribbean.
Tom received a master’s degree in international affairs from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University and a B.A. in history from the University of California, Berkeley.
