Weather Alert: Wildfires and Airport Closures – July 26, 2023
Location: Island of Sicily
Event: On July 25, 2023, wildfires broke out in the town of Cinisi, reaching the edge of the Falcone e Borsellino Airport in Palermo, forcing authorities to halt all air traffic and close the airport. Two more fronts of wildfires opened in the area of Bellolampo and Capo Gallo regions outside of Palermo. As a result, dozens of residents have been forced to abandon their houses threatened by flames. Currently, the fire brigade, the Forestry Corps and Civil Defense are responding. Sicily has faced scorching temperatures, amid a powerful heat wave that has impacted much of Southern Europe. Catania Airport remains closed following an airport fire on Monday.
